I thought she was a strong and resourceful woman, and I found it fascinating how her fictional story about Ania and the Vampire saved her life. My favorite was Minka I enjoyed reading her tale. I thought the characters were well developed and multidimensional. I enjoyed the story and I liked how the past and present combined to slowly reveal the truth. The story is told in a first person narrative from the point of view of the character whose story is being revealed. The Storyteller is both a drama and a historical novel. Jodi Picoult has written 20 novels, including My Sister’s Story. Within is included a story that Minka wrote about a young woman who falls in love with a vampire. Minka is Sage’s grandmother and she is many things including a survivor of the Holocaust as well as a creative writer. Josef is a 94 year old, healthy, German man who no longer wants to live because he is tormented by his past and the things he did as a Nazi commander at Auschwitz. Sage is a young woman who has a disfiguring facial scar, and she is battling an inner torment that disfigures her far more than the scar on her face. The Storyteller is comprised of several separate and distinct stories that interconnect. Book Review of The Storyteller: 3 Treasure Boxes

First book started off well and was entertaining. In book three its really questionable why the MC is even involved to the degree he gets involved. book 2 has absolutely nothing with the rest of the story. several quests and events from book one are just completely forgotton about. This book is the perfect example of why I always say on this forum "The numbers don't matter because your not going to use them in your story telling anyways". he needs to survive against a worm, he's going to barely survive the encounter. The MC needs to match wills against a literal eldritch god, he's going to struggle and make it happen. It also does that thing where the MC is exactly as powerful as they need to be for the scene to be dramatic. In fact most of the plot suffers from this problem where the MC's decisions are based on where the author needs them to be in the future, not based on reasonable reactions to what's going on around them in the present. The MC makes a lot of obviously bad decisions, or decisions that aren't even really remotely justifiable because it drives the plot rather than because it would be the smart thing to do. So honestly I have a lot of problems with the series. Growing up in Hayward California he was steeped in the island tradition of reggae, Jamaican cuisine, and patois.Īfter studying engineering, Lloyd became a staff photographer for the San Jose Mercury News. As a child his trips to Jamaica in the 60's and 70's shaped who he became. Lloyd was born in Oakland in 1961, a first-generation American child to Jamaican parents. Wrestling with their past while living in a land of plenty, Linton and Daisy discover that truth is the only avenue to happiness. Happiness is as scarce as freshwater in the middle of the sea. Money flows in, but something is missing. Ambition drives them to start a business and Linton capitalizes on a skill he learned as a young man in Jamaica, making a drink known in Jamaica as “Roots.” It proves wildly popular and the company, Family Roots, prospers beyond Linton’s and Daisy’s wildest dreams.īy 1986, the drink is a sensation. Becoming American citizens, they marry, and start a family. They encounter a vibrant Jamaican-American community in New York, where they meet at the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem. Seeking opportunity, Linton leaves the deep Jamaican countryside for New York and the collapse of the ice business and family crises force Daisy to leave Kingston, seeking a new start in the United States. Meanwhile in Kingston, Daisy, helps her mother managing an ice business and dreams of joining her elder sister in New York. In 1937 near Portland Cottage, in southern Jamaica, on a huge sugar estate, Linton McMann, the illegitimate son of the owner of the plantation, works making rum. Lew Wallace was born into a military and political family in Brookville, Indiana in 1827. The story behind the writing of this book is both inspirational and tragic. Grant wrote to its author, General Lew Wallace, to inform him that he was so enthralled by the book that he stayed up thirty hours straight to read it. Captivating in its original literary form as a book, President Ulysses S. The conversion of the main character, Ben-Hur, at the end of the feature is one of the most moving and affirming scenes of Christian cinematography. One of the traditions our family shared when our children were younger was the viewing of Charlton Heston in Ben-Hur around the Easter season. The story behind the composition of this time-honored classic is one worthy of being rehearsed on a regular basis, and no season of the year is more fitting for its telling than the Easter season. there resides a full-body statue of General Lew Wallace, Civil War hero and author of the literary classic, Ben Hur. In the National Statuary Hall in the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. 7/5/2023 0 Comments Wonderstruck by brian selznickThe drawings leave no room for misinterpretation.ĭespite their differences, both children are on a similar journey with similar challenges. Rose’s story is told through incredibly impressive and expressive pencil drawings done by the author. Ben’s story is told through the written word. The way Brian Selznick achieves this is like nothing I’ve ever seen. Two twelve year olds in different cities, fifty years apart. To be unable to communicate is to be isolated, even in a room full of people.Įnter the two main characters in Brian Selznick’s Wonderstruck, Rose in 1927’s Hoboken, New Jersey, and Ben in 1977’s Gunflint, Michigan. Humans have a great need and desire to communicate with one another and have, therefore, created many ways to do so. There’s also Morse Code, Braille, semaphores, hieroglyphics, and many others. How do people communicate? Through a specific language, either written or spoken using an alphabet or gestures, like American Sign Language. Then there is the subject of communication. Two of our deepest longings in life, whether we acknowledge them or not, is (1) to be connected to someone or something in a world where it is too easy to feel adrift and (2) to be heard and validated through some means of communication. We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars. Campbell Memorial Award, and the Japanese Seiun Award for best translated fiction.
